The Amogjar Pass (also written as Amojjar Pass) is a mountain pass in the Adrar region of Mauritania. It links Nouakchott to other cities like Atar, Choum, Ouadane and Chinguetti. The Agrour Amogjar cave paintings are also accessible from the pass.

There isn’t much more to say about the pass itself, but I wanted to share some of the photos I took.

There are breathtaking views of the vast, barren and untouched canyons below, and the road is pretty photogenic too. The wind is so strong when you’re right up there! I felt like I was going to blow away.

A bumpy detour will take you to the Agrour Amojjar Peak (690m/2264 ft above sea level), where cave paintings can be found in a small enclosure. They’re over 5,000 years old and feature dancers and animals. Back when they were painted, the area was green, fertile and populated.

Definitely worth the detour for anyone on the road in Mauritania!
